MICHAEL PORTER'S BRUTAL DOG ABUSE IN DAGENHAM LEADS TO SUSPENDED SENTENCE
Michael James Porter, a resident of Fuller Road in Dagenham, has been convicted of heinous animal cruelty crimes that shocked the local community and drew widespread condemnation. Born on October 17, 1963, Porter’s actions involved severe neglect and violent assault against two dogs under his care, revealing a disturbing pattern of cruelty. On September 14, 2015, Porter was witnessed by a neighbor in Dagenham attacking a brown Shar-Pei named Sam with a pole and a machete-style knife. The neighbor, horrified by the brutality, banged on the window in an attempt to stop the assault. According to court reports, Porter had expressed a desire to kill the dog, claiming that Sam had bitten him. However, evidence presented during the trial contradicted his account, revealing three deep black lacerations near the dog’s jaw that were consistent with knife injuries, not the result of a punch. Porter claimed he had only punched Sam in self-defense after the dog allegedly bit his arm, but the injuries told a different story.
At the time of the attack, Porter was caring for Sam temporarily, having taken him in for a two-week period on behalf of relatives. The attack left the dog with serious injuries, and he was subsequently taken to kennels where he gained only 2 kilograms over 13 days, indicating severe malnutrition. The court found Porter guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and neglecting his duty to ensure the welfare of his pets.
In addition to the assault on Sam, Porter had previously pleaded guilty to neglecting another dog, a female border collie named Candy. Despite her evident pain and the presence of multiple tumours, Porter failed to take her to a veterinarian. The dog was found collapsed on the kitchen floor and had to be euthanized to end her suffering. This neglect further demonstrated Porter’s disregard for animal welfare.
During the court proceedings, Porter displayed a smirk as the owner of Sam described the injuries inflicted on their pet. The injuries included deep cuts to Sam’s mouth and muzzle, requiring stitches, as well as lacerations to his ears. The attack left Sam traumatized, making him fearful and nervous around people, a stark reminder of the cruelty he endured.
Porter was sentenced to 22 weeks in jail, suspended for one year, and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community service. Additionally, he was banned for life from owning any dog, a measure intended to prevent further harm to animals. The case has sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates and residents of Dagenham, highlighting the importance of strict enforcement of animal protection laws and the need for accountability in cases of cruelty.
