CONSETT MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL UNPROVOKED ATTACK LEAVING VICTIM WITH SKULL FRACTURE
A man from Consett has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison after he carried out a brutal and unprovoked attack on his drinking partner. The incident occurred last June when Michael Kennedy, after spending a few hours drinking with the victim inside a pub in Consett, decided to end their night and walk home together.
As they moved along Front Street, Kennedy suddenly struck the victim with a punch, causing him to fall to the ground.
Kennedy then continued his assault by kicking the victim in the head, which resulted in a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain.
He fled the scene after the attack, leaving the unconscious victim while passers-by called an ambulance and remained with him until paramedics arrived.
Kennedy appeared at Durham Crown Court on a Thursday morning, where he was sentenced to four years and nine months in jail.
Durham Constabulary confirmed that the victim has since made a full recovery.
Detective Constable Christopher Bentham commented, 'This was a completely unprovoked attack which could have been catastrophic had the victim not pulled through.
Kennedy showed no remorse, leaving the victim completely alone and unconscious.
I would like to thank the witnesses who stayed at the scene and helped the victim—their actions may have saved his life.'
