CONSETT MAN JAILED FOR 13 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES AND THREATS
A former resident of Consett, County Durham, Ian Maughan, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for a series of serious offences including sexual assaults, threats with an offensive weapon, possession of an offensive weapon (a baseball bat), stalking causing serious alarm, and making threats to kill. The court heard that Maughan deliberately prolonged legal proceedings, initially remaining silent during his plea hearing at Durham Crown Court in March of the previous year.
After multiple hearings and an aborted trial in July, he eventually admitted all seven charges faced, with the last five after a scheduled trial last month.
The 65-year-old, who appeared via video link from Durham Prison during his sentencing, was described by Judge Jo Kidd as a "deeply manipulative and controlling individual" who repeatedly threatened his victims to exert control over them.
Psychological statements highlighted the profound emotional and psychological impact his actions had on the victims, one of whom is still experiencing nightmares after 18 months of counseling.
The defense argued that his behavior was out of character and linked the offenses to recent personal tragedies, including the death of his wife and other family bereavements, as well as a fluctuating mental health condition that included adjustment disorder and depressive symptoms at the time of the offenses.
The judge emphasized the severity of his crimes, contributing to a sentence of 13 years, of which he must serve at least two-thirds, amounting to over eight years.
Upon release, Maughan will be subjected to lifelong registry requirements including supervision, notification as a sex offender, and life-long restraining orders preventing contact with his victims.
