MICHAEL JOHN FROM NEWPORT FACES JAIL AFTER DOWNLOADS OF OVER 180,000 CHILD PORN IMAGES

In a disturbing case that has shocked the Newport community, Michael John, a 56-year-old resident of Westmoor Close, Newport, has been found guilty of possessing an enormous collection of indecent images of children. The court heard that John had downloaded more than 180,000 such images, including some of the most extreme and disturbing content, which he accessed repeatedly even after serving time for similar offences.

Back in 2011, John was sentenced to a year in prison after admitting to possessing 183,049 indecent images, comprising various levels of severity, with 1,680 classified as extreme level five images and videos. Despite this prior conviction, court records reveal that John continued his online searches for similar content after his release, specifically seeking videos depicting young girls aged between approximately three and eight being abused by their fathers. This pattern of behaviour was brought to light during the recent court proceedings, highlighting a troubling persistence in his offending.

During the hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, the prosecution detailed how John’s internet activity included searching for the same distressing videos he had previously been caught with. Although he initially denied breaching a sexual offences prevention order that restricted his internet use, he later changed his plea to guilty during the trial, acknowledging his violations.

Judge Christopher Clee QC issued a stern warning to John, indicating that a prison sentence was imminent given the severity of his offences. The court’s records show that in February 2011, John had appeared before the same court, admitting to 36 counts of making indecent images of children and three counts of possessing such images. Authorities had seized his computer, which contained two hard drives, DVDs with child pornography, two cameras, and printed images, during a raid in 2010.

Robin Shellard, John’s legal representative at the time, described his client as a man who had “spiralled down into a lonely, depressed and obsessive person,” emphasizing that there was no evidence to suggest he distributed the images. Despite this, John faced multiple charges, including five counts of making indecent images, one count of possessing indecent images, and a breach of his sexual offences restriction order. During the proceedings, Shellard expressed remorse on behalf of his client, who wished to apologise to the court and jury for wasting their time.

Following his guilty plea, Judge Clee granted bail with the condition that John reside at a specified address, and the case was adjourned for further reports to be prepared. The court’s findings paint a picture of a man deeply obsessed with illegal online content, with authorities highlighting the broader implications of such behaviour. The case underscores the ongoing issue of internet-facilitated child exploitation and the importance of strict legal measures to prevent further harm.

In a related sentencing hearing, the court reiterated the serious nature of possessing such a vast collection of child pornography. Prosecutor David Webster detailed how police, during a raid on January 21, 2010, uncovered a “very substantial quantity” of illegal material on John’s devices, including DVDs, a computer with two hard drives, cameras, and printed images. John admitted to possessing a total of 183,049 images, ranging from the least severe to the most extreme, with some videos included among the level five content.

Judge David Morris emphasized the damaging impact of such material, stating that individuals who obtain these images for private gratification are contributing to the global sexual abuse of children. He pointed out that the demand created by such illegal content fuels the wider exploitation and abuse of minors. As a result, John was sentenced to 12 months in prison, ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years, and subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order that restricts his internet use. The court also scheduled a future hearing to address legal arguments concerning the seizure of items during the police raid, including potential deprivation orders.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect vulnerable children from such heinous crimes.
