MICHAEL HITCHENS FROM LONGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN STOKE-ON-TRENT
In a case that has shocked the local community of Longton, a 61-year-old man named Michael Hitchens has been sentenced to prison for serious sexual offences involving a minor. The incident, which spanned nearly a decade, has brought to light disturbing allegations that have now culminated in a court ruling.Michael Hitchens, whose residence is on Bambury Street in Longton, appeared before Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court to face charges related to the sexual abuse of a child under the age of 16. He pleaded guilty to a total of ten counts, including eight charges of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault. These offences occurred over a period of nine years, indicating a prolonged pattern of abuse that has left the community and the victim deeply affected.
During the court proceedings, it was noted that Hitchens had no prior criminal record, which was considered during sentencing. A psychological report presented in court confirmed that he did not suffer from any mental health issues that could have contributed to his actions. This detail was significant in understanding the context of his behaviour, although it did not mitigate the severity of his crimes.
Representing Hitchens, Anis Ali, the defence lawyer, emphasized his client’s decision to plead guilty, stating, “He has had the good sense, to plead guilty to these counts.” Ali also highlighted the personal losses Hitchens faced as a result of his convictions, noting, “Not only has he lost his good name but everything he’s worked for throughout his life – his job, home and family.”
Judge David Pugsley delivered the sentence, which included a term of three years and three months in prison. Additionally, he imposed a sexual offences prevention order, a measure designed to prevent future offending. The judge remarked on the seriousness of the offences, stating, “I can’t ignore the fact these offences were over a long period of time,” underscoring the prolonged nature of the abuse and its impact on the victim and community alike.
