CARE WORKER MELISSA SWIFT JAILED FOR BLEACH POISON ATTACK
A 25-year-old care worker named Melissa Swift was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of poisoning colleagues at Goldfield Court care home in July 2014.Her method involved spiking water jugs and drinks with bleach, which caused seven staff members and 23 residents to fall ill.
Swift admitted guilt on three counts of attempted murder and was ordered to serve a minimum term of eight years before being eligible for parole.
She will remain in a secure mental health hospital until her mental condition is assessed and she can be transferred to prison if deemed fit.
It was revealed during court proceedings that Swift was suffering from depression and had an undiagnosed personality disorder, with authorities considering her a significant threat to public safety.
West Midlands Police’s Detective Chief Inspector Michaela Kerr characterized the case as one where Swift manipulated her colleagues and plotted to harm her coworkers based on unspecified malice.
While the incident had the potential for far worse injuries, no one was seriously harmed.
Housing & Care 21, the organization running the care home, expressed relief at the case’s resolution and praised the staff and residents for their cooperation throughout the incident and police investigation.
