PREDATORY SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR 1992 ATTACK IN SOUTH LONDON
A man described as a “predatory sexual offender” received a prison sentence after committing a disturbing sexual assault on a 21-year-old woman in south London back in 1992.Maximus John Bowman, aged 59 and residing on Crawley Green Road in Luton, was convicted on multiple charges including attempted rape, indecent assault, causing actual bodily harm (ABH), and false imprisonment during a trial held at Southwark Crown Court on July 31.
The court imposed a total sentence of seven years.
The investigation uncovered that Bowman, who had impersonated a taxi driver, offered the victim a lift home and then drove her to a nearby park, where he assaulted her.
Evidence from DNA analysis, linked through the Metropolitan Police’s Complex Case Team in 2014, confirmed Bowman's involvement.
Prosecutors referred to Bowman as a “predatory sexual offender” during the proceedings.
Detective Constable Bhulesh Pala from the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command of the Met Police noted the significance of the lengthy investigation culminating in Bowman's conviction and highlighted that Bowman’s scheme involved pretending to be a minicab driver before abducting and attacking the woman in a park.
The court was told Bowman was first arrested on suspicion of attempted rape on August 11, 2016, and charges were laid after a comprehensive review of the evidence by the Crown Prosecution Service on December 4, 2017.
This case underscores the value of victim resilience and determination in the pursuit of justice for sexual crimes.
