SEX ABUSE VICTIM MADE ATTEMPT ON HER OWN LIFE AFTER BEING CROSS-EXAMINED IN COURT

A young girl who was just five years old when she was sexually abused by Matthew Toyer has had her attacker sentenced at Newport Crown Court.

Her mother told the court that her daughter had become fearful, confused, and was unable to sleep as a result of the abuse.

Following the trial, her daughter attempted to take her own life.

Toyer, aged 46 and residing in Abergavenny, was found guilty on multiple charges including penetrating her and inducing her to touch his genitals.

He had instructed her to keep the abuse secret, but the truth emerged after she made a disturbing comment to her mother.

The court was informed that Toyer faced two counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by penetration and one of inciting sexual activity involving a child.

The trial revealed he had no prior criminal record.

During a victim impact statement read by prosecutor Ian Wright, her mother explained how their lives were irrevocably changed when her daughter made what appeared to be a simple remark, which led to the horrifying discovery of the abuse.

She described the trauma of police interviews and social worker visits, and how deciding on a medical examination was an emotional challenge.

Her mother described her daughter's drastic change: she became scared, confused, and unable to sleep, seeking physical comfort from her family.

Once a confident and lively girl, her security was shattered overnight.

The mother emphasized how the abuse tarnished her daughter’s innocence and distorted her understanding of love and responsibility.

She detailed how the court process left her daughter in distress, with her questioning reality after cross-examination.

Later, she found her daughter attempting to end her life, requiring intervention.

The mother expressed concern about the enduring impact of the abuse on her daughter’s self-esteem, understanding of safety, and future relationships.

She criticized the justice system’s harshness.

In mitigation, Owen Williams highlighted Toyer’s background as a successful businessman and a reservist firefighter.

Judge Eugene Egan highlighted her young age as a significant vulnerability.

Toyer was sentenced to 15 years in prison with a one-year extended license period, deemed a dangerous offender.

A 20-year restraining order was also issued, along with sex offender notification requirements.
