A man has been sentenced to prison for child sexual offences in Maidenhead following his arrest last year.
Matthew Smither, 26 years old and residing on Fifield Road in Maidenhead, received a five-year prison term and was issued an indefinite sexual harm prevention order at Reading Crown Court on Wednesday, April 22.
Smither admitted guilt to charges including causing or encouraging a child under 13 to participate in sexual activities, engaging in sexual communications with a minor, and meeting a child under 16 after grooming him.
The case emerged after Surrey Police were informed by a parent about improper communication between Smither and a 10-year-old boy.
Subsequent investigations uncovered that Smither had cultivated a close relationship with the young boy over several years, involving alone meetings, gift-giving, financial support, and taking the child on holiday.
An examination of digital devices found evidence of sexually explicit messages and voice recordings sent by Smither to the victim.
Thames Valley Police then took over the investigation, leading to Smither’s arrest on December 18, 2025.
During police interviews, he confessed to sending the messages and engaging in inappropriate conduct, and was formally charged the following day.
