MAIDENHEAD MAN MARIO SARDO SENTENCED FOR 20-YEAR-OLD SEX ASSAULT IN CHESSINGTON
Update: Now residing in Maidenhead June 2011 A man from Maidenhead, Mario Sardo, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a sex attack that occurred over two decades ago, after DNA evidence led to his identification.Sardo, 44, was convicted of offences including false imprisonment and indecent assault related to the attack.
The incident took place on Sunday, April 8, 1990, near Chessington World of Adventures, where Sardo assaulted a woman in a car park.
He was 23 years old at the time.
The victim was waiting for a taxi after a work function in Croydon, which did not arrive.
Sardo offered her a lift, but instead of dropping her off as agreed, he drove her to a secluded area and attacked her.
Although DNA evidence was collected at the time, authorities were unable to identify a suspect and kept the sample stored.
Last year, following a review by the Sapphire Team, the DNA was matched through the national database to Sardo.
He was arrested in February this year after the review and DNA match.
At the Old Bailey, he received concurrent sentences of seven years for false imprisonment and five years for indecent assault.
His current sentence will commence after he completes an 18-month sentence for a 2010 assault against another woman.
Sardo had previously served time for an assault, and his latest conviction confirms his guilt for the 1990 attack, which was resolved after nearly 20 years.
