MATHEW THOMAS FROM LLANELLI EXPOSED FOR GROOMING YOUNG GIRLS IN CYBER CRIME AT SWANSEA CROWN COURT
In a case that has shocked the local community and raised serious questions about police procedures, Mathew Thomas, a 21-year-old man from Llanelli, was found guilty of engaging in a disturbing pattern of online predatory behavior targeting vulnerable young girls. The court heard how Thomas exploited social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to identify and groom teenage victims, some with learning difficulties, over a period of more than a year.
According to court records, the police were first alerted to Thomas's activities in December 2017 by officers from the Cleveland Police force, who had been investigating his online interactions.
The prosecution revealed that Thomas initially approached a young girl from the northeast of England, who had learning difficulties.
He began by flattering her, complimenting her appearance, and gradually escalated his requests for photographs.
First, he asked for non-intimate images, but soon he was begging for explicit photos.
His manipulative tactics included threatening to harm himself with a knife if she refused to comply, and later, verbally abusing her to exert control.
Prosecutor Paul Hobson described Thomas's conduct as a disturbing mixture of charm, threats, and emotional blackmail, which he used repeatedly with multiple victims.
The court was told that Thomas's behavior was characterized by a pattern of grooming, intimidation, and exploitation, which he continued despite police intervention.
Following the initial investigation, Dyfed-Powys Police arrested Thomas in January 2018.
During questioning, he made significant admissions regarding his interactions with the girl, and police discovered on his mobile device images of adults engaging in sexual acts with animals.
Despite his arrest and the evidence against him, Thomas was released under investigation, only to resume his offending behavior.
Over the subsequent months, Thomas contacted three more young girls online, employing threats and emotional blackmail to obtain indecent photographs.
One victim, a 13-year-old girl, was befriended after Thomas found her Instagram account and liked numerous photos.
He then sent her videos of himself pleasuring himself and pressured her to communicate via live video chat.
At one point, he even threatened to
