MARTYN FLETCHER CAUGHT WITH NEARLY 2,000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN GATESHEAD
A police officer stationed at a detention centre in Gateshead, who was assigned to oversee the sex offenders’ wing, has been found guilty of possessing an alarming collection of nearly 2,000 indecent images of children. The officer, identified as Andrew Webster, aged 40, was apprehended during a police raid that uncovered his possession of these illicit materials.
The images included children as young as eight years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of the material involved.
Webster attempted to justify his actions by claiming that he viewed the images as a form of self-punishment and that his behaviour was linked to mental health issues, specifically PTSD.
Despite his explanations, the evidence against him was substantial, leading to a conviction that has sparked widespread concern about the abuse of trust inherent in law enforcement roles.
Following his conviction, Webster was sentenced to a three-year supervision order, which will involve ongoing monitoring and support to address his behaviour.
Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, designed to prevent any future offences and to protect the public from potential harm.
The case has raised serious questions about the integrity of those entrusted with enforcing the law and safeguarding the community, especially given Webster’s position within the criminal justice system in Gateshead.
