BARNSLEY MAN JAILED FOR VIOLENT ASSAULTS FACES EARLY RELEASE
In April 2021, Martin Underwood, 49 years old, was convicted of attacking Elizabeth Hudson inside their Barnsley home.
During the same incident, he also assaulted another individual while on police-bail.
Underwood pleaded guilty to making threats to kill and causing actual bodily harm to Ms Hudson, alongside a third charge related to non-fatal suffocation of a different woman.
In 2023, he was sentenced to over six years in prison.
Nevertheless, an emergency scheme aimed at alleviating prison overcrowding might see him released early in June 2025, having served roughly 38% of his term.
Elizabeth Hudson, who was the victim in the attack, expressed her feeling of being "sick" upon hearing about the early release.
She criticized the government, saying it was "retraumatizing victims" and lamented that her sense of safety and stability had been shortened.
She also stated that her confidence in the ability of the criminal justice system to keep people safe at this time has been significantly diminished.
