OFFENDER CONVICTED OF PATRICIDE AND SENTENCED TO 35 YEARS IN PRISON
Martin Ruddy, age 29, was found guilty of the brutal murder of his parents, Eric and Carol Ruddy, at their residence in Newcastle.
The deceased, aged 64 and 54 respectively, were discovered unconscious and subsequently died due to their injuries.
Ruddy maintained that intruders had killed his parents, but evidence demonstrated that he had physically assaulted his father with a weapon and strangled his mother using a piece of television cable.
During the trial, it was revealed that Ruddy had drugged the victims and arranged the scene to imitate a break-in.
Judge Paul Sloan QC sentenced him to a minimum term of 35 years in prison, condemning his conduct as 'despicable and ruthlessly executed.' The judge added, 'Your actions have caused and will continue to cause profound suffering.' A statement presented in court from Eric Ruddy’s sister expressed her shock and sadness, describing the murders as tearing their family apart and stressing that 'this is a tragedy that will never be resolved.'
