MARTIN CARTER FROM COVENTRY INVOLVED IN HORRIFIC DOG THEFT AND MAULING INCIDENT AT BIRMINGHAM DOGS HOME
Martin Carter, born around 1986 and residing at Mercers Meadow, Keresley End, Coventry CV7 8RF, became the subject of a serious criminal case after he was found guilty of a series of heinous acts involving a beloved dog named Marley.The incident began in November 2017 when Carter unlawfully entered Birmingham Dogs Home and stole Marley, a three-year-old Mastiff cross.
The theft was part of a broader criminal activity, as Carter was also involved in a burglary at the same facility.
Despite the initial theft, Birmingham Dogs Home staff and authorities did not give up their efforts to recover Marley.
They released CCTV footage and still images in an attempt to identify the perpetrator, demonstrating their commitment to reuniting the dog with his rightful owners.
Their persistent investigation eventually bore fruit when police located Marley at an address in Keresley, Coventry, leading to his rescue.
What made this case particularly disturbing was the subsequent cruelty inflicted upon Marley by Carter.
It was revealed during the court proceedings that Carter had arranged for the dog’s ears to be surgically cropped off.
This brutal act was an attempt to obscure Marley’s identity, making it more difficult for authorities and the public to recognize him.
Additionally, Carter had the dog’s microchip surgically removed and replaced with another, further complicating efforts to trace Marley’s origins and ownership.
Marley’s history was already marked by tragedy, as he had been re-homed by the courts after his previous owner was convicted earlier that year for using the dog in an attack on a woman.
The case against Carter was part of a broader police investigation spanning the West Mercia, Warwickshire, and West Midlands Police regions.
During the court hearing, the prosecution requested that Carter be disqualified from owning animals again, but this request was initially denied.
However, in November 2019, an appeal overturned this decision, and Carter was subsequently banned from keeping animals for life.
The court sentenced Carter to six months in prison for handling stolen goods and an additional three months for the animal cruelty offense, with both sentences to run concurrently.
