MARK UNSWORTH FROM KINGSTON-UPON-HULL AND SUTTON JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST SCHOOLGIRL
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Kingston-upon-Hull and Sutton, a teacher named Mark Unsworth has been sentenced to 12 months in prison following his conviction on serious sexual offences involving a minor girl.The incident has been described by the court as an "appalling breach of trust," highlighting the gravity of the abuse of authority by someone in a position of responsibility.
Mark Unsworth, aged 40 and residing in Sutton, Kingston-upon-Hull, faced three charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl who was only 14 years old at the time.
The girl, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, was a pupil at the school where Unsworth was employed as a physical education teacher.
Throughout the trial, Unsworth maintained a silent stance as the jury, composed of nine women and two men, deliberated for six hours before reaching a unanimous verdict in his case at Teesside Crown Court.
Evidence presented during the proceedings revealed that Unsworth, who also coached the school's girls' football team, had established a close relationship with the girl that began when she was just 12 years old.
Over time, their friendship deepened, and by the time she turned 14, she was reportedly a frequent visitor to Unsworth’s flat.
The court heard disturbing details about their interactions, including an incident on Valentine’s Day last year, when Unsworth sent her cards and gifts, notably chocolates, accompanied by a message that suggested he intended to "whip up her passion." Judge John Walford addressed the court, condemning Unsworth’s actions as a severe betrayal of trust.
He emphasized that the teacher had exploited his professional position to manipulate and take advantage of the young girl, which constitutes a serious breach of ethical conduct and trust placed in him by the community and the school.
As part of his sentence, Unsworth will also be required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, reflecting the court’s recognition of the ongoing risk and the need for public protection.
The case has left many in Kingston-upon-Hull and Sutton questioning the safety and oversight within local educational institutions, and it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable students from abuse by those entrusted with their care.
