MARK RICHARDS FROM LLANELLI SENTENCED AFTER PREDATORY PLOT AT CARMARTHEN TRAIN STATION
In a disturbing case that highlights the ongoing threat of online grooming and child exploitation, Mark Richards, a 45-year-old man from Llanelli, was found guilty of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor and planning to meet a girl under the age of 16.The incident unfolded as part of an undercover police operation aimed at catching predators attempting to lure children through digital platforms.
According to court proceedings, Richards believed he was conversing with a 13-year-old girl, whom he intended to meet in person.
Unbeknownst to him, the individual he was chatting with was an undercover officer working as part of Operation Harrier, a police initiative designed to identify and apprehend individuals seeking to exploit children.
Richards had arranged to meet the girl at Carmarthen train station.
On the day of the planned meeting, he arrived there accompanied by his adult daughter, a detail that was noted during his arrest.
The police had been monitoring his online activity, during which Richards engaged in increasingly explicit conversations with the decoy, using platforms such as Chatiw, WhatsApp, and Kik.
The conversation quickly turned sexual, with Richards referring to the girl as a “hot little schoolgirl” and a “naughty little b****,” despite her repeatedly stating her age.
Further evidence revealed that Richards provided the decoy with his daughter’s phone number, and they scheduled to meet the following day.
When Richards disembarked from the train shortly after 10 a.m.
on July 10, police officers waiting at the station moved in to arrest him.
During subsequent police interviews, Richards refused to comment on the allegations, choosing to answer “no comment” to all questions.
His daughter, aged 20, was present during the arrest and later told authorities that she was aware of her father’s “abnormal sexual behaviour.” Richards, who resides on Stafford Street in Llanelli, admitted to attempting to communicate sexually with a child and grooming her with the intent to meet.
The court was informed that he has a criminal history comprising 11 previous convictions across 53 offences, none of which were related to sexual offences.
Judge Huw Rees addressed the court, stating that Richards had intended to lure the girl to a meeting with the explicit purpose of having sex.
The judge highlighted that Richards had taken condoms and lubrication jelly with him, further indicating his intent.
Despite the girl making it clear she was only 13, Richards was reportedly encouraged by her age, which he found “appealing.” The court also considered a probation report which concluded that Richards posed a high risk of causing serious harm to children aged between 12 and 16.
In light of his guilty pleas, Richards received a sentence of 18 months in prison, with a 25% reduction for his cooperation.
He is expected to serve half of this sentence before being released on licence, with the remaining period to be served in the community.
Additionally, Richards was subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, restricting his access to the internet and contact with children.
He will also be registered as a sex offender for the same duration, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions aimed at protecting vulnerable minors from potential harm.
