MARK POWER'S BRUTAL BIRMINGHAM DOMESTIC ASSAULT LEAVES VICTIM INJURED AND TRAUMATIZED

A man named Mark Power, aged 37 and residing in Erdington, Birmingham, has been convicted of a particularly violent domestic assault that has left his partner severely injured. The incident, which was captured in disturbing CCTV footage, depicts Power violently attacking his partner, including dragging her along the floor by her hair, punching her repeatedly, and forcefully throwing her down the stairs three times. The footage vividly illustrates the brutality of the attack, which was described in court as 'brutal, sustained and relentless.'

The assault resulted in the victim suffering multiple serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis, an injury to her eye socket, a broken back, and fractured vertebrae. She also sustained a split lip and wobbly teeth, injuries that necessitated extensive medical intervention. The victim has since been left walking with crutches, her life irrevocably altered by the violence inflicted upon her. She recounted the profound impact of her injuries and the mental trauma she endures, stating, 'I rely on my family and friends for support and my daily needs. I am unable to walk properly and need help for the simplest of tasks. I just wish Mark had killed me because I am serving my own life sentence.'

It was revealed during the court proceedings that Power had been released from prison just weeks prior to the attack, after serving time for an earlier assault against the same victim in 2014. This pattern of violence underscores ongoing issues of domestic abuse and the challenges faced in preventing repeat offenses. During the attack, Power was observed dragging his partner along the floor by her hair, punching her, and repeatedly throwing her down the stairs, actions that caused severe injuries including fractures to her vertebrae and head. The police found Power at the scene, visibly agitated and with bloodstains on his clothing, while the victim was discovered unconscious and badly injured upon their arrival.

The court heard that the incident was triggered shortly after Power's recent release from incarceration, highlighting the persistent danger posed by individuals with a history of domestic violence. The judge sentenced Power to 13 and a half years in prison for grievous bodily harm with intent. Additionally, a lifelong restraining order was issued to prevent him from contacting the victim, Ms. Standeven. The judge emphasized the severity of the assault, noting how Power's actions left her 'weak, vulnerable and severely incapacitated.' The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence issues and the critical need for victims to seek help and support before tragedy occurs.
