BIRMINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR HOUSE FIRE THAT KILLED GREAT-GRANDMOTHER
A man has received a prison sentence of at least nine years following his admission to killing a great-grandmother during a house fire.According to reports, Mark O'Brien launched petrol through the letterbox of Peggy Wright's residence in Birmingham in April 2021, then set it alight before fleeing the scene.
Ms Wright was discovered with injuries alongside her son and later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
O'Brien had earlier confessed to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
He is currently detained in a secure mental health facility, with a court ruling that he will only be transferred to prison to serve his sentence if he is considered mentally fit.
In addition, O'Brien pleaded guilty to charges of arson with recklessness as to whether lives would be endangered, as well as causing grievous bodily harm.
