BOLTON MAN JAILED FOR 'PROLONGED' ASSAULT OF WOMAN
A man named Mark Nuttall, aged 46, from Farnworth, was sentenced for attempted murder at Bolton Crown Court on Monday, September 8.He was found guilty of a prolonged assault on a woman which lasted over four hours.
The victim called an ambulance after being attacked and covered in blood.
Initially, she told police she was assaulted by an unknown male, but later disclosed that Nuttall was responsible.
He demanded sex from her and, after she refused, the assault began.
Nuttall kept her detained at his house, suppressing her escape for more than four hours.
The victim believed she was going to die, as she described talking to herself to stay brave during the ordeal.
Nuttall attempted to suffocate her with a ligature, tried to stab her with a dull knife, and hit her repeatedly with a rolling pin.
He also slashed her face with a meat cleaver, causing such severe injuries that she needed extensive plastic surgery.
Throughout the attack, she begged him to call an ambulance, but he refused, instead telling her to watch Emmerdale as she begged for help.
Nuttall cleaned the bloodied cleaver and hid it away.
The court noted his actions to cover up the crime, including cleaning the weapon.
Judge Nicholas Clarke rejected Nuttall’s claim of amnesia due to epilepsy, citing the evidence of the attack and the cover-up.
Nuttall was sentenced to 25 years in total—21 years custodial and a further four on license.
