MARK CUTHBERT'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL CRUELTY IN AYR: DOG FIGHTING AND CAT KILLING REVEALED

Mark Cuthbert, born on March 7, 1977, and residing at 82 Thornyflat Place in Ayr, has been convicted of heinous animal cruelty crimes that have shocked the local community and animal welfare organizations alike.

His criminal activities include orchestrating dog fights, killing domestic cats, and engaging in the illegal procurement and mistreatment of animals.

According to court records and investigations, Cuthbert was found guilty of keeping dogs specifically for the purpose of animal fighting, as well as killing a cat both at his home and at another unspecified location.

The Scottish SPCA’s special investigations unit (SIU) uncovered disturbing evidence linking Cuthbert to these illegal activities, which had been ongoing for some time.

Investigators traced Cuthbert’s activities back to March 2018, when they received intelligence suggesting that he was involved in dog fighting.

Acting on this tip, authorities obtained a search warrant for his residence.

During the search, they discovered injuries on his pets that were consistent with injuries sustained during fights.

The evidence indicated that Cuthbert had been self-medicating his dogs to hide their injuries and avoid detection.

Seized from his home were electronic devices containing graphic videos and images depicting animal fights.

These clips showed Cuthbert’s dogs attacking and killing badgers and domestic cats.

The footage matched the animal fighting paraphernalia found at his residence, which included tracking collars, nets, live animal traps, syringes, superglue, and pet carriers.

DNA analysis of some of these items supported the conclusion that they had been used in illegal animal fighting activities.

The dogs involved in these brutal acts were identified as a black and white Patterdale terrier named Billy, and two brown female Patterdale terriers called Digger and Tally.

The investigation revealed that Cuthbert had purchased cats through the online selling platform Gumtree, under the false pretense that they would be placed in safe and loving homes.

Instead, these cats were used as live bait for his fighting dogs, leading to their suffering and often torturous deaths.

During the court proceedings, Cuthbert pleaded guilty to multiple charges under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006, including keeping animals for fighting, procuring cats for fighting purposes, and arranging, participating in, and causing animal fights to occur.

The charges specifically cited violations of Sections 23 (1)(a) and 23 (2) of the Act.

A Scottish SPCA officer involved in the case described the situation as one of the most disturbing cases of animal cruelty they had encountered.

The officer stated, “This is a truly horrific case of animal cruelty, where we suspect dozens of animals have suffered mentally and physically at the hands of Mark Cuthbert.

His inhumane treatment of animals is completely unacceptable.” The officer further detailed the graphic nature of the evidence, including a distressing video showing the three dogs attacking a domestic cat in a field, which was fighting desperately for its life.

Many of the cats purchased by Cuthbert are believed to have endured prolonged suffering and brutal deaths.

The investigation also uncovered that Cuthbert had been acquiring cats from Gumtree, deceiving owners into believing their pets were going to good homes.

When authorities visited Cuthbert’s residence, they observed severe injuries on two of his dogs.

Digger had a healed injury to her lower lip, deforming her face in a V-shape, while Billy exhibited aggressive behavior and facial scars, including injuries to his nose and jaw.

These injuries underscored the brutal treatment the animals had endured.

In sentencing, Cuthbert received ten months’ imprisonment and was handed a ten-year ban on owning or keeping any animals, which will remain in effect until October 2029.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of the Scottish SPCA’s specialized unit to combat animal fighting and cruelty, relying heavily on public cooperation and anonymous tips to bring offenders to justice.

Wendy McIlloney, born February 28, 1970, is Cuthbert’s long-term partner and cohabitant.

She shares two older children with him and has other children from previous relationships.

Neighbors have reported that McIlloney, who also resides at the same address, is known to participate in hunting and digging trips with Cuthbert and their dogs.

Allegations suggest she may have procured cats on his behalf, although no charges have been filed against her at this time.

The couple is also involved in backyard breeding of Staffies and lurcher-type dogs, raising further concerns about their treatment of animals.
