AYR SEX ATTACK MAN CLEARED OF 'RAPE BID' IS JAILED
AN AYR man guilty of sexually assaulting a woman but acquitted of allegations of intent to rape her was jailed for causing a 'lasting impact' to the victim.
John Lynch was locked up for 12 months on Tuesday, January 20 after previously denying the charges when he appeared for trial at Ayr Sheriff Court last year.
The 63-year-old was convicted of sexually assaulting the victim, seizing hold of her, and then pinning her down on September 1, 2022.
He was found to have forcibly removed her clothing, repeatedly kissed her and carried out further described sexual acts on her.
Lynch, represented by defence advocate Rosalyn McTaggart, was found guilty of the charge under deletions, with allegations on the Crown's indictment "and this you did with intent to rape her" removed.
We previously reported that the jury reached a verdict on Friday, December 12.
Sheriff Siobhan Connelly deferred sentence for criminal justice social work reports as well as a restriction of liberty order and risk assessment.
Bail had been continued for Lynch, of Bankfield Park, Ayr, who was told he would be placed on the sex offenders register and subject to police notification requirements from then on.
When he returned to court for sentencing this week, Sheriff Connolly told him he "violated [the victim's] person", causing her "significant upset", adding that "violating her sexual autonomy" will "have a lasting impact".
The sheriff said: "The court requires to mark this offence with a period in custody." He was jailed for a year and placed on a further non-harassment order for 10 years, prohibiting any contact with the victim.
He was told he will remain on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
