NOTTINGHAMSHIRE MUSIC TEACHER BANNED FOR LIFE AFTER SINISTER CRIMES REVEALED
A Nottinghamshire-based music instructor has been barred from the teaching profession for life after being found guilty of serious criminal offenses.
Mark Bates, 43 years old, had been operating as a franchisee for the MLC Group, a music education provider based in West Bridgford, since 2016, teaching students how to play drums.
He was arrested at his home on April 20, 2023, with the police seizing his laptop and a USB stick as part of their investigation.
Authorities discovered a disturbing set of child sexual abuse images, including one classified as Category A—marked as the most severe under the law.
The USB drive contained 2,606 images, accompanied by 2,585 images rated as Category B and 1,600 as Category C; some photographs involved girls as young as five years old.
Bates pleaded guilty in December 2023 to creating indecent images of children, with offenses spanning from May 26, 2019, through April 20, 2023.
He was subsequently sentenced in June 2024 to a 21-month suspended prison sentence, alongside 200 hours of unpaid community service and up to 40 days of rehabilitative activities.
He was also registered as a sex offender, and restrictions were placed on his internet and device access for a decade.
Following his arrest, the MLC Group referred Bates to the Teaching Regulation Agency, which advised that he be barred from teaching.
A disciplinary panel acknowledged the seriousness of his crimes, especially his possession of the most severe category images, emphasizing the ongoing risk of reoffending.
The education secretary concurred, issuing an indefinite ban on Bates from engaging in any employment within schools, sixth form colleges, youth residential facilities, or children’s homes in England, and he is barred from applying to restore his teaching eligibility.
