WIGAN OFFENDER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AFTER POSING AS TAXI DRIVER
A man named Marius Dolhascanu, born on December 29, 1976, and residing on Hey Street in Wigan, has been sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison after being found guilty of rape. The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, May 1, 2016, when a 30-year-old woman, while out on Market Street in Hindley with a friend, sought a taxi to go home.
Believing she had found a legitimate taxi, she entered Dolhascanu's BMW and requested him to drive her home.
Instead, he took her to a different address where he committed rape.
After the assault, he dropped her off on Broadway, where she managed to get home and confide in her partner about the ordeal, leading to the police being called.
CCTV investigations revealed that Dolhascanu had previously posed as a taxi driver, including giving a lift for £10.
Detective Sergeant Stuart Woodhead described him as a predator who prowled Market Street and seized opportunities to prey on women.
Even after his arrest, Dolhascanu continued to deny his actions, forcing the victim to relive her experience in court.
The victim's bravery in testifying was highly praised, and her evidence was crucial in securing his conviction.
The police expressed hope that the sentence would bring her some comfort and remove a dangerous individual from the streets.
