MARIS SLIKSANS FROM PETERBOROUGH SENT TO HOSPITAL AFTER BRUTAL ATTACK
Maris Sliksans, a 33-year-old man from Buckminster Place in Peterborough, has been involved in a disturbing and violent assault that has left a lasting impact on the victim and the community alike. The incident occurred late in the evening, around 9:15 PM on September 11 of the previous year, near Welland Skate Park, a well-known local landmark in Peterborough.According to police reports, Sliksans approached a woman who was on her way to work, seemingly with malicious intent. He suddenly embraced her from behind, catching her off guard. When she turned to face him, she was met with a terrifying sight: he was holding a knife pressed against her neck. The attacker then forcibly dragged her into a nearby thicket, where he threatened her with the weapon and demanded sexual intercourse. Despite her desperate attempts to negotiate and resist, Sliksans overpowered her, wrestling her to the ground. During this assault, he stole her mobile phone and made an attempt to carry out a rape.
The woman fought back fiercely, kicking Sliksans in the groin in a bid to escape. His response was violent; he punched her multiple times in the face and head before fleeing the scene. The police investigation quickly led to the recovery of the weapon used in the attack—a knife—which DNA analysis confirmed belonged to Sliksans.
In a court hearing held in August, Sliksans admitted to charges of attempted rape, actual bodily harm (ABH), and threatening a person with a blade. His case was further addressed at Cambridge Crown Court on October 18, where he was sentenced to a hospital order under section 37 of the Mental Health Act. Additionally, he was placed under an indefinite detention order under section 41, which means he will remain hospitalized unless he is formally discharged by medical authorities.
Detective Sergeant Kellymarie Harman, who led the investigation, expressed her commendation for the survivor’s bravery. She stated, “This was an incredibly terrifying incident for the survivor of this case, which will no doubt have a lasting impact on her. I would like to commend the survivor for her strength and the bravery she has shown in supporting this investigation. Maris Sliksans is a danger to women, and I am pleased he is off our streets.”
The survivor, whose identity remains confidential for legal reasons, issued a heartfelt statement emphasizing resilience and strength. She said, “You never truly know what one feels when you go through it yourself. Ladies, we are survivors, and we need to rise strong. Tell the world the truth and never doubt yourself, be the voice for many voiceless women.”
Support and information regarding sexual offences are available through the Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s official website and various organizations dedicated to assisting victims. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of community vigilance and support for those affected by such traumatic incidents.
