OFFENDER JAILED FOR RAPE IN NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME

A man has been jailed for six years and put on the Sex Offender's register for life after raping a woman in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Marin Covaci, who is 37 years old, appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Thursday 4th September.

The police spokesperson stated "Marin Covaci, of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, picked up the survivor in Kidsgrove in December 2023.

He told her he would drive her home.

When she got in, he drove to a layby, locked the car, and raped her.

After it happened, the survivor bravely told someone about the incident.

We started investigating after receiving the report and arrested Covaci the next day.

He was charged with rape of a woman and causing a female to engage in sexual activity.

He denied the offences in court.

Through the bravery of the survivor and the evidence gathered, the jury found Covaci guilty on both counts at an earlier hearing.

He has been sentenced to six years in prison and will be on the Sex Offender's Register for life.

Additionally, Covaci was given an indefinite restraining order against the survivor.

The police encouraged survivors of sexual offences to contact them via 101 or Live Chat on their website.
