STAFFORDSHIRE MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR BOILING WATER ATTACK ON WIFE
Christopher Stanway, a man from Staffordshire aged 52, has been jailed after pouring boiling water over his wife, who had recently married him.He was convicted of assault following an incident in their flat in April of last year.
Additionally, he admitted to attempting to interfere with the legal process by persuading his wife multiple times to drop her complaint to the authorities.
The court was informed that their relationship was worsening, with Stanway showing jealousy and abusive behaviors that intensified after he started drinking alcohol in February 2022.
On April 21, he entered the bathroom where his wife was bathing and, despite her request for him to fill the kettle with boiling water so she could warm her bath, he poured boiling water directly into the bath while she was still inside.
She felt a sharp, severe pain in her back, promptly exited the bath, and spent ten minutes under a cold shower.
The woman was kept in hospital overnight.
During investigation, Stanway accused his wife of having an affair with a neighbour.
Although he was moved to a Premier Inn and was released on bail with restrictions not to contact her, he persisted with abusive phone calls, messages, and sent romantic gifts, urging her to withdraw her complaint.
He maintained that the boiling water incident was accidental and claimed intoxication at the time.
He also described himself as an 'appalling husband'.
The judge, Sally Hancox, imposed a sentence of one year and two months in prison, acknowledging Stanway’s intelligence yet pointing out the difficulties he would face serving his sentence.
Stanway has no previous criminal convictions and is still married, continuing to pay rent on their property.
