MARGARETTE AND NORMAN COOPER'S HORRIFIC FARMING CRIMES IN BANGOR TEIFI AND LLANDYSUL

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community and animal welfare authorities, farmers Margarette Cooper, born around 1938, and her son Norman Cooper, born approximately in 1963, both residents of Gilfach Chwith in Bangor Teifi, Llandysul, Ceredigion SA44 4JE, were found guilty of severe animal neglect and cruelty in 2019.

Investigations carried out by Ceredigion Council revealed a tragic and heartbreaking scene at their farm, where dozens of cattle had either perished or been subjected to extreme neglect. The total number of cattle affected was confirmed to be 84, with many of these animals suffering from starvation, dehydration, and injuries that ultimately led to their deaths.

One particularly distressing detail uncovered during the investigation was the condition of a cow that was tethered to prevent her from falling onto her side. Despite this restraint, she succumbed to her suffering while still tied to the wall, highlighting the neglect and lack of proper care on the farm.

Inspectors found carcasses of dead cows decaying in close proximity to the surviving animals, some of whom were in such poor health that they had to be euthanized following veterinary examinations. The surviving cattle were described as exhausted, hungry, and severely dehydrated, with many lying down in a state of despair and ultimately dying in the sheds.

Alun Williams, the corporate lead officer for policy and performance at Ceredigion Council, expressed his shock at the conditions encountered during the investigation. He stated, “The animal health officers involved with this case have never experienced such appalling conditions at any farm in their careers.” He further explained that most of the officers involved had farming backgrounds themselves but were still confronted with horrific circumstances that made their task of rescuing the remaining animals and retrieving carcasses extremely difficult and distressing.

Following the investigation, both Margarette and Norman Cooper faced legal consequences. They were sentenced to six months in jail, though this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning they would not serve time unless they committed further offenses within that period. Additionally, they were ordered to pay costs and charges totaling £2,615 each. Norman Cooper was also mandated to complete 150 hours of unpaid community service.

Furthermore, both individuals were disqualified from owning or caring for any animals for a period of ten years, with the exception of their four elderly dogs, which they are permitted to keep. This case has brought to light the severe consequences of neglect and cruelty in animal farming, prompting ongoing discussions about animal welfare standards in rural communities across Wales.
