GLASGOW COUPLE GIVEN PROBATION FOR BABY NEGLECT LEADING TO DEATH
A couple named Ashley McDonald, aged 20, and Marc Morrison, aged 21, were convicted of neglecting their baby son, Anton, who tragically died at three months old from a rare bowel disease. The court heard that between January and February 2011 at their home in Thornliebank, Glasgow, the flat was found to be in a deplorable state, strewn with waste, with the baby sleeping in a dirty cot and not receiving proper medication after an operation.
The child was taken to hospital suffering from a cardiac arrest, with paramedic Frances McIntosh describing the scene: "Anton was wrapped in a dirty blanket, with dirty fingernails, and lying on a stained, urine-soaked mattress." It was also revealed that the flat contained multiple used nappies, overflowing waste, and evidence of neglect.
Photographs taken on the day Anton died showed a carry cot with a stained mattress, the presence of used nappies, and a number of bottles with traces of milk.
Dr Karen Wedlock, the child's doctor, confirmed the mattress was heavily stained and smelt strongly of urine.
The couple was sentenced to 18 months' probation, with the sheriff stating they did not intentionally cause Anton's death but failed to provide the standards of care expected of responsible parents.
The court recognized their vulnerabilities—McDonald was likely suffering from post-natal depression, and Morrison came from a background of social isolation.
Post-trial, McDonald's stepfather expressed disappointment, saying, "Nothing has changed except Anton is gone.
I think they should have been sentenced, two years each at least." Visual evidence and court testimonies highlighted the neglectful conditions of their home, including overflowing nappies, waste, and uncleanliness, contributing to Anton's tragic demise.
