MAN JAILED AGAIN FOR SHAKING BABY WHO LATER DIED
A man named Marc Guy has been re-sentenced after being previously convicted of causing catastrophic brain injuries to a six-month-old baby, Ewan Marrin, in 1998 at their home in Seaham, County Durham.Guy, then aged 23, had lost his temper and assaulted the infant by violently shaking him.
The injuries inflicted were severe, resulting in Ewan requiring life-saving surgery and being left permanently disabled.
The court was told that initially Guy lied to medics, claiming Ewan had fallen from a sofa, but medical assessment confirmed the injuries were from violent shaking.
In 1999, Guy pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and was sentenced to 21 months' imprisonment.
Tragically, Ewan died in 2016 at age 18 due to “sudden and unexpected death in epilepsy,” which was directly related to his earlier brain injuries.
Guy was re-arrested in November 2017 while visiting the UK and pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
On Thursday, he was sentenced to an additional 21 months in prison by Judge Paul Sloan QC.
The judge noted that Ewan’s injuries were of a permanent nature, leaving him dependent on others and suffering from seizures.
Family members, including Ewan’s mother and stepfather, expressed deep sorrow and explained how Guy’s actions robbed them of a normal life.
The court acknowledged Guy’s remorse and life transformation since his release from prison, including his marriage and move to Ireland, but emphasized that no sentence could undo the harm caused.
