NEWPORT – RAPIST TREATED WOMAN LIKE AN ANIMAL, COURT TOLD
A rapist who treated a woman like an animal has been jailed for 12 years.Majid Ali, 56, of Cedar Road, Newport was found guilty by a jury following a trial of multiple rapes against her.
The defendant had denied any wrongdoing.
Andrew Davies, prosecuting, read out the victim impact statement during which she revealed: & It will take many years for me to recover from what he has done to me ive been left with deep emotional scars.
She added often wake up from having nightmares.
I will struggle to forget what he has done to me.
I dont feel confident leaving my house.
I have such low self-esteem and I find it hard to go about my life day-to-day.
Joshua Scouller representing Ali said his client had moved from his native Pakistan to start a new life in the UK.
The defendants early life had been difficult and deprived, his barrister told Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.
Ali has struggled to learn English, he added.
The defendant followed proceedings through an Urdu interpreter.
Ali was described as a devout and a hard-working man who had no previous convictions recorded against him.
The defendant suffers with heart and back problems and has tried to take his own life whilst being held in custody, Mr Scouller added.
Judge Richard Kember told Ali: Your victim says you treated her like an animal.
He added: You have shown no insight or remorse into your offending and you have not accepted the verdicts of the jury.
The defendant will have to serve two-thirds of the 12-year jail sentence in custody before being released on licence.
Ali will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
He must pay a statutory victim surcharge within three months of his release from prison.
