LYNDON BROOKS FROM NEWBRIDGE AND NEWPORT JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In a case that has shocked the communities of Newbridge and Newport, Lyndon Brooks, a 55-year-old man, was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of possessing an extensive collection of child pornography images. The court heard that Brooks, who resides on Bro Blowden Street in Newbridge but originally hails from Newport, had stored over 2,600 disturbing images on his personal computer. Among these were photographs depicting infants, which prosecutors described as particularly heinous.

The Swansea Crown Court was told that Brooks had actively downloaded these illicit images from the internet for his own sexual gratification. The investigation into his activities was initiated after police uncovered the material on his computer during a forensic examination of his digital devices. The police had been examining his equipment, which he used between 2001 and 2004 while living in the Neath Valley near Swansea, when the images were discovered.

Brooks was arrested following a series of confessions he made to law enforcement officers. These admissions came after he was acquitted earlier this year of a separate charge of raping a young girl, a verdict that was reached by a jury in June. Despite the earlier acquittal, the police continued their investigation into his digital activities, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Michael Burr described the images as “repugnant and appalling,” emphasizing the severity of the offense. The court was informed that Brooks had pleaded guilty to over 30 charges related to the making and possession of child pornography photographs. The judge expressed sympathy for the police officers who deal with such disturbing cases regularly, stating, “My sympathy goes to the police who have to deal with this on a regular basis in an attempt to bring this vile trade to an end.”

Defense lawyers requested that Brooks be given a community rehabilitation order instead of a custodial sentence, arguing that he should be given a chance at rehabilitation. However, the court was told that the likelihood of him avoiding prison was “extremely remote,” and the judge ultimately decided on a three-year jail term.

In addition to his prison sentence, Brooks was ordered to register as a sex offender for life. Furthermore, a court order was issued to prevent him from ever working with children again, aiming to protect potential victims from future harm. The judge also noted that Brooks could expect to be released after serving approximately 18 months, but he would remain under parole supervision until 2010, ensuring continued monitoring of his activities.

Brooks’s case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences faced by those involved in such crimes.
