MAN SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND COERCIVE CONTROL
A man from Southampton has been formally convicted and sentenced for a series of serious crimes involving sexual assault and abusive behavior towards a woman in her 30s.Luke Ross Cromar, aged 30 and residing on Bramley Crescent, appeared before Southampton Crown Court on Friday, 6 September, where he received a prison term of nine years for his actions.
According to reports, the case was brought to light after the victim contacted authorities in January of this year.
She detailed a pattern of both mental and physical abuse inflicted by Cromar over a period starting from the summer of 2022.
The allegations included disturbing instances of monitoring her movements through the use of a smart speaker installed within her home, which was used to track her whereabouts without her consent.
The victim also recounted being assaulted and threatened by Cromar, which instilled a persistent fear of violence and harm.
One of the most distressing aspects of the case was the victim being coerced into sexual acts by Cromar.
She reported that she felt compelled to comply out of fear of further violence or assault if she refused.
This pattern of coercion and control was part of a broader campaign of abuse that severely impacted her well-being.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Western Operation Amberstone team, a specialized unit focusing on rape and serious sexual offenses, conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations.
Their efforts culminated in Cromar’s arrest and subsequent charging.
Despite pleading not guilty to multiple charges including vaginal rape, oral rape, assault by penetration, and coercive and controlling behaviour a jury at Southampton Crown Court found him guilty of all counts after a trial.
Following his conviction, Cromar was sentenced to eight years in prison for the sexual assault and coercive control charges.
Additionally, he received an extra year for breaching a previously suspended sentence, bringing his total imprisonment to nine years.
Detective Constable Marie Leather, who led the investigation, expressed her thoughts on the case, emphasizing the severity and duration of Cromar’s abusive conduct.
She stated, “Cromar’s prolonged period of abuse, violence, and coercive and controlling behaviour, which spanned two years in total, has understandably had a severe impact on the victim, which will stay with her forever.” She further added, “While nothing can take that away, I hope that this sentence goes some way into helping her move forward with her life, knowing that Cromar is now behind bars.” Detective Leather explained the nature of coercive and controlling behaviour, describing it as a pattern of acts including threats, humiliation, and intimidation used to harm, punish, or frighten the victim.
Such behaviour often aims to isolate the victim from support networks, exploit them, and deprive them of independence, thereby controlling their daily life.
She concluded by praising the victim’s bravery, saying, “I am so grateful to the victim and commend her courage in coming forward and reporting what had been happening to her.
Her bravery throughout the investigation and criminal justice process has helped us put Cromar in jail for what he has done.”
