LLANELLI WOMAN JAILED FOR DRINK-DRIVE CRASH THAT KILLED BABY
A woman who caused catastrophic brain damage to a baby in a drink drive crash has been jailed for four years.Lucy Dyer, 23, of Heulwen Terrace, Llanelli, admitted to causing death by dangerous driving and drink-driving at Swansea Crown Court.
Dyer drove her BMW into the side of a car carrying Eva Maria Nichifor on 8 October in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire after drinking in local pubs.
Eva's parents, Florin and Carmen, described themselves as 'distraught by her loss'.
Dyer had been drinking in a nearby pub before the collision.
Witnesses reported that on the night of the crash, Dyer behaved in a 'merry' and 'boisterous' manner, and had to be stopped by pub staff from taking her drink outside.
She was found to have a blood alcohol level of 65 micrograms per 100ml of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
After the collision, she ran from the scene before returning and sitting with her cousin.
The crash resulted in Eva suffering a brain stem injury and she died the next day.
Dyer was disqualified from driving for five years and ordered to take an extended driving test.
Prosecutors stated that Dyer had no prior convictions but was a single mother of a young boy with autism.
The court heard that Dyer made a tragic decision to drink and drive on an evening she marked the anniversary of her father's death, which she explained as her attempt to cope with her grief.
The sentencing reflects the devastating impact of her actions, with prosecutors emphasizing the profound loss experienced by Eva Marie's family and Dyer's own lifelong consequences.
