BOURNEMOUTH MAN SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR BRUTAL 1994 RAPE
A man named Lionel Campbell from Bournemouth has been convicted and sentenced for a serious sexual offense that took place over a decade ago.Following the attack, Campbell was arrested after DNA evidence matched evidence collected in a reconstructed investigation using modern techniques.
The victim, a woman who cannot be named for legal reasons, recounted her terrifying experience.
She described how Campbell burst into her luxury Belgravia flat, along with an accomplice, and first used a firearm to rob her of cash and jewelry at pistol point.
The attacker then took her to a BDSM 'dungeon' where he brutally assaulted her, with her expressing fear that she might die during the attack, especially when he grabbed her by the neck.
Campbell, who was 37 at the time of his conviction, then forcibly raped her.
She described her terror and the mental strength she mustered to avoid resisting, fearing that resistance would lead to further violence.
She and her maid were then restrained to prevent escape, and Campbell believed he had successfully hidden his crime for many years.
The investigation was reopened using DNA profiling, which linked Campbell to the crime scene in 2003.
Despite claiming innocence and forgetting about the incident, Campbell was convicted in March 1994 for rape, indecent assault, robbery, false imprisonment, and possession of a firearm.
The court condemned him as still a 'considerable' danger to women, and he received an eight-year jail sentence.
