LIAM ROBERTS FROM GRAYS ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL OFFENCES IN IPSWICH AND GRAYS
A man with a troubling history of sexual offences, Liam Roberts, aged 31, has narrowly avoided serving time in prison after being convicted of multiple serious charges. The offences, which include attempted rape and numerous counts of sexual misconduct, were committed over a span of several years, primarily between 2007 and 2011, when Roberts was still a teenager. The case was heard at Ipswich Crown Court, where Roberts faced a total of 14 counts related to sexual offences.During the trial, Roberts vehemently denied 11 charges alleging that he caused a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity. He also denied one charge of inciting a child under 13 to participate in sexual acts, along with two additional counts of attempted rape. The victims, who are now adults, came forward in August 2021, prompting the police to charge Roberts in November 2022. The allegations and subsequent investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that spanned several years during his adolescence.
On April 24, Roberts was handed an 18-month prison sentence, but this was suspended for the same period, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits another offence within that timeframe. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine of £2,500 within three months and was subjected to a five-year restraining order designed to prevent any contact with the victims. The court's decision drew praise from law enforcement officials, who emphasized the importance of justice and victim support.
Detective Constable Kim Shrubsall, who led the investigation, commented on the case, stating, "This conviction demonstrates that we will take action and investigate if you have been the victim of sexual abuse, regardless of how long ago the offences took place." She also highlighted the bravery of the victims in coming forward, acknowledging that child abuse is often a hidden crime that can remain undetected for years.
