SAUCHIE: RAPIST LIAM KANEY STRANGLED AND CHOKED VICTIMS
A DOUBLE rapist who strangled and choked his victims, putting the lives of two women in danger, has been remanded in custody and warned he faces certain jail.Liam Kaney, 23, raped and assaulted his victims at addresses in Bannockburn, Fallin, St Ninians and the Raploch, all in Stirling, and in Sauchie.
One of the women had “lost count of how many times she had been strangled” by Kaney during a relationship that lasted six months when she was an 18-year-old college student.
She said: “I was mentally and physically tortured.” In court she said: “It was the worst night of my life.
I thought I was going to die.” She described Kaney as erratic and unpredictable, angry and raging “at anyone – mostly me.” A jury heard that between May and December 2018, he raped her and assaulted her to the extent her life was at risk.
He also bit her, leaving teeth marks on her face and thigh, and inflicted bruises daily.
His second victim, 21, was repeatedly raped, choked, and abused during their relationship from March 2020 to June 2022.
Kaney held a pillow over her face, held her down, seized her neck, and restricted her breathing.
He also pulled her hair, pushed, punched, and kicked her, even when she was pregnant.
The woman broke down in tears during her testimony.
Prosecutor Neil McCulloch stated that both women suffered “very nearly identical treatment.” At the trial, the jury at the High Court in Stirling took just four hours to find Kaney guilty of rape, threatening behaviour, assault to the danger of life, and domestic abuse.
He denied the charges.
Judge Lady Haldane deferred sentencing until November 11 at the High Court in Glasgow, revoking bail, and placing Kaney on the sex offenders' register.
She told him: “You have been convicted of a series of violent and abusive offences against two partners.
You subjected them to prolonged physical assaults as well as psychological torment.
Most serious of all, you've been convicted of raping each of them on numerous occasions.
There is no alternative to a custodial disposal.” Kaney showed no emotion as he was led away to the cells.
His defense, represented by Iain Smith, reserved mitigation.
