NEWPORT MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULT AND ABUSIVE CONDUCT TOWARDS EX-PARTNER
The defendant, Liam Bridgeman, 23, of Newport, was involved in a violent altercation with his ex-partner in Cardiff city centre.He punched her full force in the face after she attempted to retrieve her dog from him, despite bystanders intervening.
CCTV footage played in court showed him pulling his arm back before delivering a punch to her face with a closed fist.
The victim described feeling immediate pain and crying out as Bridgeman struck her again.
He also spat at police officers upon arrest, and had previously breached a conviction for threats to kill and assault.
During sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court, Bridgeman pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assaulting emergency workers, receiving a sentence of 36 weeks imprisonment.
The court heard that he has a history of violence, with three prior convictions including assaults and criminal damage.
The victim's statement expressed her fear and emotional trauma, stating, 'The actions of Bridgeman made me feel extremely low in mood and I felt isolated from friends and family and support workers.
I am a shell of my former self walking on eggshells and in constant fear he will hurt me, my family and pets.' The judge cited his history of violence and mitigation related to his difficult background in prison.
