On 24th April 2026, craftsman Liam Ashworth received a seven-year prison sentence after being convicted of sexually assaulting and raping another service member in 2024.
CFN Ashworth, who holds a rank comparable to that of a Private in non-technical units, committed the offending act on 2 December two years prior, while serving with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at Wattisham Airfield in Suffolk.
The court found him guilty on 16 March 2026.
Service Prosecuting Authority Commander Ed Hannah commented, “This was a heinous crime, and the victim displayed remarkable bravery in coming forward.” He added, “Investigations by Service Police from the Defence Serious Crime Command and prosecution efforts by the Service Prosecuting Authority demonstrate the Armed Forces’ commitment to thoroughly investigating and strictly prosecuting sexual misconduct.
Hannah noted that the case exemplifies the efficiency of the Service Justice System, which moved from initial report to sentencing in just 17 months.”
