HARTLEPOOL TEENS LEWIS BATES AND MARK WILSON SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL RAPE IN HARTLEPOOL

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Hartlepool, two young men, Lewis Bates and Mark Wilson, have been sentenced to 14 years in prison each for their involvement in the brutal rape of a schoolgirl.

The incident, which took place last year, was described in court as a callous and violent attack that left the victim physically and psychologically scarred.

According to court proceedings, Bates, aged 19 and residing on Runciman Road, and Wilson, aged 18 from Arkley Crescent, both in Hartlepool, were found guilty of one count each of rape and child abduction.

The trial earlier this year revealed disturbing details of the assault, which occurred after the trio was seen cruising around the Blackhall Colliery area.

The prosecutor, Matthew Bean, explained that the three men stopped to speak with a group of children before the events unfolded.

Despite confirming that the victim was under 16, the men drove her to a secluded lane near the coast, away from public view.

Hunter, aged 18 and living on Hirdman Grove in Hartlepool, was also involved in the incident, having helped lure the girl into Bates’s car.

Hunter was convicted of child abduction but denied the charge, although he was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

During the trial, it was revealed that Hunter remained in the back seat of the vehicle while Bates and Wilson led the girl a short distance on foot.

The victim recounted how each man took turns raping her, turning her around multiple times during the assault.

Legal representatives for Wilson and Bates acknowledged that the attack was sustained but argued it did not last for hours or days.

Wilson’s lawyer, Jim Withyman, stated that the girl entered the car voluntarily at the roadside, attempting to mitigate his client’s involvement.

Similarly, Jane Waugh, representing Hunter, emphasized that her client was unaware of the others’ intentions and remained passive throughout the ordeal.

Judge Christopher Prince delivered the sentence, condemning the attack as “callous” and “brutal,” emphasizing the complete disregard shown by the offenders towards their victim.

The judge highlighted the severe physical and psychological harm inflicted and noted the significant planning involved in the attack.

As part of the sentencing, the court ordered the confiscation of Bates’s Seat Ibiza car and mandated that both Bates and Wilson register as sex offenders for life.

In addition to their prison terms, Bates and Wilson will serve their sentences in a young offenders’ institution until they reach 21, at which point they will be transferred to an adult prison.

The case officer, Detective Constable Helen Tindale of Durham Police, was commended for her role in handling the case.

Meanwhile, Hunter, who has been on remand, is expected to be released within the next two months, given the time already served.

The community of Hartlepool continues to grapple with the aftermath of this disturbing incident, which has left a lasting impact on the victim and her family.
