2012: A man who broke into a woman's home and assaulted her sexually on New Year's Day was sentenced to life imprisonment today.
Leon Joseph Daly, aged 36, carried out the heinous attack after surveilling the elderly woman, a widow living alone, Birmingham Crown Court was told.
Judge Alistair McCreath remarked that the severity of the crime warranted a life sentence to safeguard the public, especially vulnerable women, from Daly's threat.
Daly, from Yardley Wood in Birmingham, had previously pleaded guilty to rape following confirmation by DNA evidence connecting him to the assault.
The court revealed that the 78-year-old victim was subjected to two death threats during her assault in the early hours of January 1.
