EDINBURGH MAN JAILED FOR RAPE IN PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL GROUNDS
A man named Lawrence Williams, aged 26, who has a history of previous convictions including a five-year jail sentence for assault with intent to ravish, was jailed for eight years after pleading guilty to attacking and raping a 49-year-old woman patient at the grounds of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital on September 16 of the previous year.
The court was informed that Williams approached the woman, who was a voluntary patient receiving treatment for depression, by pretending to be from the CID and showing her a wallet with supposed ID.
Despite her suspicion, Williams then attacked her, dragging her along the ground, removing her clothing, and raping her before walking away.
When arrested three days later in Inverness, Williams told police, 'I was trying to get back into the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
I cannot help myself.
I need treatment.
I do not know why I did it.' His defense argued that he had a psychiatric history, and submitted psychiatric reports to explain his actions, requesting that his background be taken into account during his imprisonment.
