LAURENCE SWIFT STRUCK OFF VETERINARY REGISTER OVER SEXUAL ASSAULT AND ANIMAL ABUSE IN CANTERBURY ROAD

In September 2004, Laurence Swift, a veterinarian based in Herne Bay, faced severe professional repercussions following a series of disturbing allegations and convictions.

Swift, who operated the St Francis Veterinary Clinic located on Canterbury Road, was officially removed from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) register after a disciplinary hearing that lasted three days.

Swift's troubles began when he admitted to committing an indecent assault on a 12-year-old girl in July of that year.

The gravity of his misconduct was recognized by the disciplinary committee, which concluded that his actions rendered him unfit to continue practicing as a veterinary surgeon.

The committee's decision was further reinforced by findings related to his treatment of animals, which included allegations of disgraceful conduct involving a cat named Blue.

The case revealed that Swift had administered unlicensed medication to Blue, a cat under his care.

The committee heard that Blue was given drugs that were not approved for veterinary use, which ultimately led to the cat's suffering and subsequent euthanasia the day after the treatment.

Joan Williams, Blue's owner, described the tragic incident, stating, “He thrust this tube down his throat, but obviously it went down the windpipe and just smothered his lungs in this formula.

That’s what he had to be put down for, because his lungs were full up with the stuff.” Additionally, allegations concerning Swift's treatment of a dog named Jess were dismissed during the proceedings.

However, the committee also examined claims that Swift had mistreated Jess, a dog found to have missing teeth after an X-ray, and that he had used unlicensed medicines on her.

These charges contributed to the committee's decision to remove his name from the veterinary register.

Gordon Hockey, a spokesperson for the RCVS, emphasized the broader responsibilities of veterinary professionals, stating, “Veterinary surgeons, as professionals, have wider responsibilities than just in the care of animals.

His conduct can have an effect on the profession’s reputation and it’s on that that he is being judged.

In addition, there were three charges that related to his inappropriate use of medicines and his lack of regard for the welfare of a cat, and on those charges he’s been directed to be removed from the register as well.” Swift’s case highlights the serious consequences faced by veterinary practitioners who breach ethical standards and legal obligations, especially when their actions involve harm to both animals and vulnerable individuals.
