LAURENCE CASSIDY FROM MAGHULL AND WIDNES JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities of Maghull and Widnes, Laurence Cassidy, a 42-year-old logistics manager, was sentenced to nine months in prison after being found guilty of possessing and downloading child pornography. The conviction followed a detailed investigation that uncovered Cassidy's involvement with illegal images stored on a computer disc, which he had left in a company vehicle at Ashworth high security hospital. It was on January 8 of the previous year that Cassidy’s misconduct came to light. A colleague at Ashworth hospital discovered a computer disc left in a vehicle used by staff members. Following hospital policy, the disc was promptly handed over to the hospital’s computer department for examination. The analysis revealed that the disc contained approximately 1,800 pornographic images, including 118 indecent photographs of children. These images had been downloaded from the internet, and their presence on the disc was a serious breach of both legal and ethical standards.
Further investigation revealed that Cassidy kept these images on a CD-ROM specifically to prevent his family from viewing them on the family computer’s hard drive. Court proceedings disclosed that Cassidy, who resided on Hall Avenue in Widnes, had viewed the illicit images while his wife was out playing badminton and his two young sons, aged seven and ten, were asleep in bed. The court heard that Cassidy had experience in building computers and had even advertised a computer maintenance service, which added a layer of complexity to the case.
Throughout the trial, Cassidy maintained that he had not knowingly downloaded child pornography, claiming that the images had been saved accidentally. However, the jury rejected his defense, finding him guilty of possessing indecent images of children. His legal representative, Geoffrey Lowe, acknowledged Cassidy’s acceptance of the verdict but emphasized that Cassidy had never subscribed to any child pornography websites or paid for such material. Despite this, the court deemed the offense sufficiently grave to warrant a custodial sentence.
Following his conviction, Cassidy resigned from his position at Ashworth hospital. His lawyer highlighted the profound impact the case had on Cassidy and his family, stating, “He has lost everything. His job has gone and his personal circumstances have taken an absolute battering.” The lawyer also noted that Cassidy’s children had to change schools due to the reactions of other parents to his conviction, illustrating the social repercussions of his actions.
Judge William George, presiding over the case, sentenced Cassidy to nine months in prison. Additionally, he disqualified Cassidy from working with children and ordered him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating, “There is no evidence that you took part in the onward distribution of the images for financial profit, but this offense is so serious only custody is justified.” As Cassidy was led away in custody, his wife was seen sobbing in the public gallery, visibly distressed by the outcome.
Representatives from Merseycare NHS Trust, which manages Ashworth hospital, confirmed that Cassidy was suspended immediately after the allegations surfaced and resigned once he was found guilty. The case has left a lasting scar on the community, raising concerns about the safety and integrity of local institutions and the well-being of families affected by such crimes.
