EX-WIDNES POLICEMAN CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES ON PHONE
A former police officer convicted of child sexual offenses was visibly trembling when authorities requested to examine his mobile device.Bryn Majid, a former officer with Cheshire Police who served in the Halton region before working as a custody suite officer, had previously been imprisoned in October 2020.
This earlier incarceration followed his entrapment in a paedophile hunter operation, where he was caught sending explicit images to someone he believed to be a 12-year-old girl via the Kik social media app.
Now aged 64, Majid appeared again in court this week after authorities discovered images depicting child sexual abuse on his devices and he pleaded guilty to two counts of creating indecent images of children.
At Liverpool Crown Court, it was explained that the ex-Widnes and Runcorn resident was stopped by police officers on Judges Drive, Liverpool, on May 7 last year.
Officers confirmed that Majid was a registered sex offender and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order requiring him to submit any electronic devices for inspection upon request.
Prosecutor Sarah Egan stated that Majid began to tremble when he produced his iPhone, which contained evidence of his use of Snapchat, Kik, and Telegram—actions in breach of his imposed restrictions.
Consequently, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment last July for violating the order on three occasions, but he was recently brought back to court after a forensic examination of his phone was completed.
Authorities uncovered a Category A indecent image—considered the most serious—depicting child sexual abuse, as well as three images classified as Category C.
During police interview, Majid insisted he had “never seen the images” and had not downloaded or searched for such content, denying any sexual attraction to children.
The court also learned that the defendant had three prior convictions for ten different offenses, including his previous prison sentence in October 2020.
He believed he was communicating with a child, but in reality, he was speaking with an undercover officer.
Using the username Copper762 on Kik, he sent a photograph of his genitals to someone he thought was a 12-year-old girl and proposed meeting up so he could “hold her hand and show her how to kiss.” When his home on Hale Road in Widnes was searched, officers discovered 151 indecent images of children on his phone and laptop.
At sentencing at Old Coach Road in Runcorn, Majid admitted attempting to engage in sexual activity with a minor and downloading three indecent images; he was sentenced to 20 months in prison.
Defending solicitor David Woods stated that his client was “actively seeking support to address his behaviour and prevent recurrence.” Judge Anil Murray, delivering the sentence, remarked: “The pre-sentence report indicates that you are beginning to show some understanding of your offending, and that you are motivated to change.
However, there remains a risk that needs to be managed.
The best course of action appears to be a suspended sentence with conditions, which I will impose.” Majid, currently residing on Trinity Road in Bootle, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, suspended for two years.
He is also required to complete 30 days of rehabilitative activities and undertake a 12-month mental health treatment program.
Furthermore, he must register as a sex offender for the next decade, and his existing sexual harm prevention order will remain in effect.
