A man assaulted his former girlfriend by forcing her against a door, stamping on her head, and threatening to slit her throat, a court was told.

Kyle Gettings, aged 23, was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to attacking 19-year-old Victoria Shaw-Jones.

The couple had been together since October 2008, and prosecutor James Wilson described Gettings as 'possessive.' On July 26 of the previous year, just two days after their breakup due to his controlling behavior, Miss Shaw-Jones returned home from a night out with friends at around 2.40am.

Outside her back door, she saw someone approaching, and Gettings grabbed her, throwing her to the ground while covering her mouth to silence her screams.

She attempted to run inside, but he caught her again, pushed her against the kitchen door, and proceeded to kick and stamp on her head before fleeing the scene.

The attack resulted in bruising and swelling on her head, shoulder, and jaw.

At Newport Crown Court, it was revealed that Gettings, from Tennyson Road in Newport, had prior convictions related to assaults on Miss Shaw-Jones.

He was arrested but, while on bail, was allowed into a friend's house where Miss Shaw-Jones was staying.

At around 2.40am, she woke to find Gettings standing at the foot of her bed.

He told her she was coming with him, but she refused.

In response, he punched her, grabbed her by the hair, and pulled her off the bed.

He then kicked and punched her again before retrieving a kitchen knife, threatening to slit her throat.

Wilson stated she was terrified and believed she was going to be killed.

Gettings, who has a record of ten convictions for 28 offences, pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm, common assault, criminal damage, and making threats to kill.

During his defense, solicitor Robert Duval described him as unable to control his temper in difficult situations, acknowledging his responsibility and expressing remorse for his actions.
