KYHL SYKES FROM MANSFIELD WOODHOUSE CAUSES GAS EXPLOSION DURING ARREST IN SHOCKING CRIME

In a disturbing incident that unfolded in Mansfield Woodhouse, police officers found themselves in a perilous situation while attempting to apprehend 29-year-old Kyhl Sykes on charges related to sexual offenses and other serious crimes. The events took place in February 2023, when authorities arrived at Sykes' residence following reports of sexual assault involving a young girl.

Officers approached the property, knocking on the door and attempting to communicate through the letterbox in an effort to make contact with Sykes. Despite their repeated efforts, there was no response from inside the house, which was occupied solely by Sykes at the time. Concerned for their safety and the potential danger within, the police decided to forcibly enter the premises through the front door.

As they entered, a strong smell of gas immediately became apparent, raising alarm among the officers. The situation escalated dramatically when Sykes, who was inside the house, struck a match. This act ignited a backdraft, causing the kitchen door to explode outward in front of the police officers. The explosion prompted the officers to retreat swiftly from the property, fearing for their lives and the safety of nearby residents.

In response to the explosion, neighboring properties were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Emergency services worked quickly to secure the scene and make the house safe. During the incident, Sykes sustained burns to his face and hands, injuries that resulted from the explosion. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed in the event.

It was revealed that the day prior to the explosion, Sykes had engaged in sexual activity with a girl, an act that had been reported to the police, prompting their investigation. The case against Sykes was further detailed during his court appearance at Nottingham Crown Court on August 10, where prosecutor Steven Bailey outlined the nature of his offending.

Bailey explained that Sykes had groomed the girl, gradually building her trust before abusing her sexually. The court heard that Sykes had taken photographs of the girl without her knowledge and had sent her explicit messages and pictures, which caused her to feel worried and confused. Additionally, police found that Sykes had searched for images of young girls on the internet and possessed 20 indecent Category C photographs of a child.

In court, Sykes pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered, two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl, and possession of indecent images of a child. Judge Stuart Rafferty KC sentenced Sykes to a total of six and a half years in prison. The judge condemned Sykes for his predatory behavior, stating, “You abused this girl and treated her as an object. You began to groom her and encouraged her to have feelings about you by telling her you had feelings for her, in a wholly improper way.”

Regarding the arson charge, Judge Rafferty emphasized the danger posed by Sykes’ actions, saying, “Fortunately for you, the police arrived before the house began to fill with gas. It’s perfectly obvious from their radio communications and shouting through the letterbox that you were aware the police were coming into the house. You selfishly struck the match. The backdraft could easily have been a fireball had time gone on. If the police had come about half-an-hour later, you would have blown them, the house, yourself, and others to kingdom come.”

Sykes was sentenced to four and a half years for the sexual offenses, with an additional two years to be served consecutively for the arson. He also received a three-month concurrent sentence for possessing indecent images. Furthermore, Sykes was subjected to a 10-year restraining order and will be registered as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community in Mansfield Woodhouse.
