KEVIN SYMS CONVICTED OF CHILD ABUSE IN ATHERSTONE, WARWICKSHIRE
Kevin Syms, a man with a troubling criminal past, has been found guilty of heinous crimes involving the abuse of three young children in Warwickshire. The 63-year-old offender, who previously served a life sentence for the murder of Nicholas Tame in South Wales in 2014, faced justice once again for his disturbing actions. In 2022, authorities launched an investigation into allegations of historical sexual abuse that dated back to the 1990s. These reports came from three victims who accused Syms of abusing them during their childhood in Atherstone, a town in Warwickshire. The allegations included serious charges such as the rape of a child under the age of 13, eleven counts of indecent assault, and three counts of indecency with a minor.
Following a thorough trial at Warwick Crown Court, the jury reached a verdict of guilty on all counts. The court's decision marked a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for the victims, who had come forward after many years to report the abuse.
On April 7, Syms was sentenced to serve 18 years in prison for these crimes. His sentence will run concurrently with his existing minimum 14-year term, which he was already serving for his previous conviction. Furthermore, Syms has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities following his release.
Warwickshire Police spokesperson Detective Constable Kevin Usher expressed his hope that the sentencing demonstrates the justice system’s unwavering commitment to holding offenders accountable, regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes occurred.
Victims of Syms’s abuse expressed feelings of relief and a sense of justice being served following his conviction. They also extended their gratitude to law enforcement and the judicial system for their bravery in coming forward and reporting these offenses after many years of silence. The case underscores the importance of perseverance in seeking justice for victims of childhood abuse, regardless of the elapsed time.
