KEVIN SMITH FROM CRAWLEY AND HORLEY JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST TEENAGE GIRL

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Crawley and Horley, Kevin Smith, a 53-year-old man with a troubling history, was sentenced to prison for serious sexual offences involving a young teenage girl. Smith, who previously resided on Court Lodge Road in Horley, was convicted of six counts of sexual activity with a minor after a lengthy trial at Guildford Crown Court. The court heard that Smith had targeted the girl, who is now 15 years old, over a period stretching from June 2010 to March of the following year, engaging in inappropriate and illegal conduct during this time.

During the sentencing hearing held on Thursday, May 3, the presiding judge, Mr. Recorder Jeremy Carter-Manning, emphasized the gravity of Smith’s actions. He pointed out that Smith had exploited the girl’s vulnerability, which was a key factor in the case. The judge remarked, “You may have seen that vulnerability and used that to facilitate your offending,” highlighting the manipulative nature of Smith’s conduct. The court also acknowledged that grooming was involved in the case, adding a layer of seriousness to the offences.

Furthermore, the judge noted the significant age difference between Smith and his young victim, describing it as an “obvious and serious aggravating feature” of the crimes. Smith’s criminal record includes a prior police caution, which was issued after authorities discovered images depicting bestiality on his computer. This previous incident added to the concerns about his character and conduct.

Following his conviction, Smith was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order. This order restricts him from having any contact with girls under the age of 16 unless he has explicit permission from their parents, who are made fully aware of his criminal history. The court’s measures aim to prevent any future harm and protect vulnerable minors.

Victim impact statements presented during the trial revealed the profound emotional and psychological toll on the young girl. She reportedly experienced panic attacks and ongoing sleep difficulties, illustrating the lasting trauma inflicted by Smith’s actions. Her mother expressed her frustration and helplessness, stating that she feels unable to fully support her daughter and has become overly protective of her other children as a result of the incident.

It was also disclosed that Smith suffers from diabetes but has managed to maintain steady employment despite his personal health issues. His defense attorney, Rupert Hallowes, pointed out that Smith had led an “unblemished life” until middle age and denied the charges. Hallowes described Smith’s behavior as reckless and outrageous, acknowledging the jury’s verdict but emphasizing that his client’s offending was a deviation from his otherwise unremarkable life.

Since his release from custody, Kevin Smith has relocated to Broadfield, Crawley, where he is now living. His move follows his separation from his wife, and he remains under strict legal restrictions due to his criminal convictions.
