MAN JAILED FOR COERCIVE AND CONTROLLING BEHAVIOUR
Lee Yates has received a three-year prison sentence after being convicted of controlling and abusing a woman over several years in Crawley.Sussex Police were alerted by a woman in her 40s who reported that Yates had engaged in an extended pattern of controlling conduct against her.
He exerted influence over numerous aspects of her daily life, such as determining her clothing choices, restricting her bathing time, and preventing her from falling asleep before him or staying in bed longer than he did.
Additionally, she was compelled to prepare meals for him and surrender any extra money she had.
When disagreements arose, they often escalated into physical violence and threats against her pets.
The woman also claimed that Yates raped her on two separate occasions.
The police investigation led to his arrest, during which the victim was protected and offered specialist support.
Yates faced charges including coercive and controlling behaviour, along with two counts of rape.
During a hearing at Lewes Crown Court on 2 April, he was convicted of the controlling conduct but found not guilty of the rape charges.
Subsequently, on 15 April, he was sentenced to three years in prison.
